Kim Robinson has developed a reputation as a leading figure in manual therapy education. Toby Hall is well recognised for his publications and research. He has forged an international reputation for clinical excellence in manual therapy and has been a valued contributor to the Masters in Clinical Physiotherapy programme at Curtin University of Technology for many years. Toby qualified as a physiotherapist in the UK in 1985 and then gained his Post Grad Dip in Manual Therapy, MSc, and PhD at Curtin University in 1990, 1996, and 2010 respectively. He now conducts a variety of lectures and clinical programmes around the world. Toby is a member of the editorial board of Manual Therapy Journal and sub-editor of the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy. He is a co-author of the new textbook “Mobilisation with movement: The art and the science” published by Elsevier. He has more than 60 peer reviewed publications focused on cervicogenic headache, the Mulligan Concept, and neural tissue pain disorders. Peter is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who consults 3 days per week in a multi-disciplinary practice (www.bodylogicphysiotherapy.com), and is an Associate Professor at Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia where he teaches at a post graduate level and conducts high impact clinical research. Peter has an International reputation for his ground breaking clinical research investigating the development, classification and management of chronic spinal pain disorders and the development of a new management approach to Non-specific chronic low back pain – cognitive functional therapy. He collaborates with a number world leaders in spinal pain research. He has published over 70 papers on his work in international peer review journals, has presented the findings of his research at more than 50 National and International conferences and has run clinical workshops in over 20 countries. Michael graduated from the New Zealand school of physiotherapy, Otago in 1968. He then studied at and graduated from the British School of Osteopathy, Londonn in 1974. He completed his diploma in Manipulative Therapy in 1981. In 1983 he started teaching manipulation techniques to small groups. This progressed to teaching at the Auckland Scool of Physiotherapy on its Advanced Diploma program. Since then he has been active in planning and implementing post-graduate manipulative physiotherapy programs for the New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapy Association and the Auckland School of Physiotherapy post-graduate program. Michael is the author of “Spinal Manipulation- A Manual For Physiotherapists” and has authored a videos and CDROM’s. Michael has enormous talent and expertise in the field of teaching a highly skilled aspect of manual therapy.

This comprehensive four-week programme provides clinicians with intensive tuition in an integrated approach to orthopaedic manual therapy of the spine, sacroiliac joints, ankle/foot, hip, knee and shoulder girdle complex. This very popular Manual Concepts course is held in Perth and annually in Europe, with the cooperation of Formaterapia, a continuous professional development company based in Portugal but organizing courses throughout Europe.
The primary aim of the program is to integrate joint, muscle and neural tissue based manual therapy concepts, with special reference to state of the art evidence based practice, to provide a more functional and comprehensive approach to the management of a range of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. This is a unique opportunity to be educated and closely supervised by our internationally respected team of clinical educators led by Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists Kim Robinson and Dr Toby Hall.
The syllabus places particular emphasis on the spinal regions and related spinal pain disorders with relevant consideration of the shoulder girdle complex, hip, knee, ankle/foot, and pelvis/sacroiliac joints. This syllabus is a biopsychosocial approach which integrates a range of manual therapy concepts developed by many different manual therapists. The core principle of the approach taken is classification and sub-grouping of pain disorders, including assessment for psychosocial issues. Management is based on identification of specific sub-groups amenable to manual therapy including movement impairment (articular dysfunction), motor control impairment, and neural tissue pain disorders. Assessment of articular dysfunction incorporates the Combined Movement approach, as well as evaluation of segmental motion and pain provocation tests. Treatment for this sub-group includes a range of mobilisation, manipulation (high velocity thrust) and mobilisation with movement techniques. Evaluation and management of motor control impairment is designed around the O’Sullivan approach. Neural pain disorders are sub-classified into Neuropathic pain with sensory hypersensitivity, Compression neuropathy, and peripheral nerve sensitization. This sub-classification system is management driven and is backed up by supporting evidence.
Kim Robinson and Dr Toby Hall are the coordinators and course developers. Awarded Fellowship of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, they have 60 years clinical experience between them and have taught manual therapy for more than 25 years at a postgraduate university level. In addition for the last 20 years they have been teaching short manual therapy courses to physiotherapists around the world. Toby and Kim are the principal educators for the program and guide participants through the comprehensive course content.
Participants are provided with extensive pre-course reading material and handouts to cover all aspects of the program. Varied teaching formats, including slides, video and practical demonstration facilitate the learning and clinical reasoning processes. Patients, where possible, will be presented to the group to illustrate the clinical application of the approach.
Evidence based practice is a strong theme of the course. Participants are guided through a logical and clinically reasoned approach to the evaluation of the patients presenting condition. Participants are taught skills and techniques that enhance efficient and effective physical examination of a wide range of clinical presentations.
Participants completing the Manual Concepts 4-week Certificate in Orthopædic Manual Therapy program may be eligible to apply for credits towards advanced standing (Recognition of Prior Learning for unit “Musculoskeletal Science 751”) in the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Physiotherapy (Manipulative Therapy stream) and Masters in Clinical Physiotherapy (Manipulative Therapy stream) offered by Curtin University of Technology. Those who wish to, and who have appropriate qualifications (typically a Batchelor’s degree in Physiotherapy and an English IELTS score of 7.0), may then able to enroll in the School of Physiotherapy’s 3 distance learning units, “Evidence Based Practice 750”, “Management of Pain Disorders 652” and “Anatomy and Pathology 651”. These units are completed over 2-3 semesters (12-18 months). Each distance learning unit will incur an additional cost payable directly to Curtin University. Upon successful completion of these units the participant will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Physiotherapy (Manipulative Therapy). Further to completion of this course participants may be eligible to enroll in second semester (5 months) of the Masters in Clinical Physiotherapy (Manipulative Therapy stream) to achieve this qualification. This would lead to level 2 membership of the MPA group of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. These courses will be conducted in lecture, tutorial and workshop format for the clinician or academic who is interested in manual therapy, manual medicine or musculoskeletal medicine. It is anticipated that the course content will be suitable to individuals who are seeking new knowledge, to individuals seeking to expand their knowledge and to those individuals seeking the stimulation of clinical interaction. Whilst the course will be presented at a high level this should not be seen as a barrier to participation for those with little or with no previous experience in this special area. As a result of attending the course it is anticipated that participants will gain personal satisfaction as in a variety of ways, which will enhance their individual requirements. There are therefore no pre-requisites for participation.
Course Philosophy
These manual therapy programmes are aimed at merging the examination of the joint, muscle and neural systems into an integrated wholistic examination procedure. We place strong emphasis on teaching clinicians the ability to perform an accurate and specific manual therapy examination.
The examination process developed by Manual Concepts is based on a range of manual therapy concepts and approaches. We believe that this eclectic approach into one concept provides a more realistic, multifactorial approach to the examination and treatment procedure.
Joint System
As part of the assessment of the joint system we aim to teach a range of passive motion testing procedures to include provocative tests for specific structures as well as tests to determine specific motion segment dysfunction. A significant aspect of the assessment procedure is the use of combined movements as developed by Brian Edwards. Equally important is the use of specific passive segmental motion testing and provocative tests for pain reproduction. Current research demonstrates that identification of joint hypo/hyper mobility and subsequent treatment based on this classification improves treatment outcomes.
Neural System
Neural tissue dysfunction is an important aspect of the physical examination. A comprehensive overview of neural tissue pain disorders is presented before assessment procedures and differential diagnosis for different types of neural dysfunction, including neuropathic pain with sensory hypersensitivity, peripheral nerve sensitization and compressive neuropathy (radiculopathy). Assessment to distinguish these problems will be demonstrated and practiced. The clinical relevance of distinguishing these different types of disorders will be presented, particularly in relation to management.
Muscle System
An emphasis of this programme is a functional approach to the assessment of the motor control impairment. Current research indicates that specific stabilizing exercises for lumbar spine disorders are not effective, where this is not the case for cervical spine disorders. Determining which patients require rehabilitation of motor control is an important part of this programme. A systematic graded, functional approach to the management of patients with motor control impairment will be taught.
A core principle of the programme is the ongoing analysis of the examination findings from the subjective and physical examination procedures. To ascertain an appropriate manual therapy diagnosis critical analysis is developed through clinical reasoning applied to specific case studies. These programmes do not provide the participants with a recipe approach to treatment. Participants will be able to develop though sound methodology, appropriate treatment strategies with logical progression over time.
Participants
There is no pre-requisite in terms of manual therapy experience. These programmes offer a high level of information and clinical expertise, providing all participants regardless of previous clinical experience and knowledge with a stimulating learning environment. Previous programme participants have recommended Manual Concepts educational programmes. They have reported excellent feedback in terms of material content, presenters’ knowledge, and practical supervision.

To develop biomedical and evidence-based methods of examination, evaluation and physical treatment of spine neuromusculoskeletal pain disorders.
To provide or enhance knowledge of normal anatomy, pathoanatomy and biomechanics of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
To provide or enhance knowledge of pathophysiology of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
To promote an understanding of the mechanisms for patient presentations of dysfunction such as in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine neuromusculoskeletal pain disorders.
To develop an ability to evaluate and differentially diagnose cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine neuromusculoskeletal pain disorders.
To develop the ability to prescribe and apply appropriate evidence-based physical treatments for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine neuromusculoskeletal pain disorders.

The spine course is held in Paris in 2 sections of 5 days and will be held towards the end of 2014. The peripheral course is held in Perth from the 21st April to the 2nd May (10 days).
